Never say never if you’re talking to a girls’ basketball team who is also motivated by personal experiences with cancer. The Dollar Bay girls’ basketball team pulled off a successful Pink Out fundraiser this year and was able to provide three iPads plus a $100 I Tunes card to help the Women Living with Cancer Support Group. One of those iPads was purchased through a grant from the Keweenaw Community Foundation and another throughUP Health System – Portage. Portage also underwrote the cost of the fabulous Pink Out t-shirts the team auctioned off as part of their fundraising event.
Team member Libbi Rogan, who lost her mother to breast cancer two years ago, was one of the driving forces behind the idea of getting iPads. “When my mom was having chemo treatments we bought her an iPad to help pass the time and take her mind off things. Treatments can take hours and it really helps to have these iPads for entertainment and keeping in touch with family and friends. It makes a hard time just a little easier,” Libbi said.
“These inspiring young members of our community recognized the value of working together, helping people in need, and addressed future needs for people going through difficult situations. It was an honor to be a part of their efforts,” said Will Schuett from UP Health System – Portage.
Congratulations to the entire Blue Bolts team led by Coach Steve Krahling. Players include: Taylor Busser, Libbi Rogan, Cami Daavettila, Emma Stout, Paige Isaacson, Bobbi Jo Caskey, Bailey Poyhonen. The JV girls’ team also helped with the event. Your efforts to fill a need you perceived in the community is an inspiration to all of us.
