‘Dogs Sweep Gremlins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
– Hancock swept a doubleheader from Houghton, 11-1 and 8-7.

Today…
– Calumet entertains Negaunee.
– L’Anse hosts the Gogebic Miners.

In softball yesterday…
– Houghton dropped both of its games against Ishpeming, 8-2 and 15-2.

Today…
– Hancock welcomes Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In golf yesterday, the Houghton girls took an easy team victory at their own Invitational at the Portage Lake Golf Course. Jeffers was second, and Ontonagon third. Calumet won the boys tourney, with Houghton second and West Iron County third.

At the Copper Mountain Conference track meet yesterday, the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls took an easy team victory over second-place Chassell and third-place Ontonagon. Bessemer dominated the boys meet, with Lake Linden-Hubbell second and Dollar Bay a distant third.

The WestPAC track meet will be run today at Calumet.

Brendan Middleton and Alexa Destrampe have been named as the recipients of the Outstanding Male and Female Senior Athlete Awards at Lake Linden-Hubbell High School. Middleton earned 11 varsity letters in football, hockey and track. He received multiple honors for each sport, and will play football at Michigan Tech this fall. Destrampe earned 15 varsity letters in basketball, volleyball, track and softball, and earned multiple Copper Mountain Conference honors for volleyball and basketball. She plans to attend Michigan Tech to study Exercise Science.

Finlandia
Former Jeffers basketball standout Julia Nordstrom will join the Finlandia Lions hoops team next season. Nordstrom led the Jets to A Class D district title this year. She was named to the UPSSA All-Upper Peninsula Class D first team, and the Detroit Free Press Class D All-State fourth team, while averaging 24 points per game.

The Lions have also picked up another men’s soccer player. Jahlen Ayala comes from Panther Creek High School in Cary, North Carolina.

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball tonight…
– In Laurium, Bucko’s.Labatt’s faces Old Milwaukee at 6:15, and then plays Suomi Restaurant at 7:30.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Erickson-Crowley-Peterson meets Koppers at 6:15, and then takes on Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s at 7:30.
– At Hurontown, Downtowner Two plays Coca Cola/Monte Carlo at 6:15, and then faces Library/906 Vapor at 7:30.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ bats were quiet again last night, as they lost to the Houston Astros 6-2. A day after getting just one hit, Detroit batters managed only three singles and a Mikie Mahtook home run. Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs over six innings. Only two were earned, as the Tigers committed three errors.

Nelson

The Tigers continue that series at Houston tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Charlie Morton. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 4-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays last night. Jimmy Nelson struggled through five innings, giving up all four Toronto runs, and taking the loss. Milwaukee scored three in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Brewers wrap up that quick set against the Blue Jays this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against Marcus Stroman.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs, the Senators edged the Penguins 2-1 last night. The Eastern Conference final is tied at three wins per team, and will be decided tomorrow night at Pittsburgh. The winner will face the Predators for the Stanley Cup.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers downed the Celtics 112-99. Cleveland leads the Eastern Conference final three games to one, and could advance to the NBA championship series with a victory tomorrow night at Boston.
