High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet swept Lake Linden 4-1 and 24-9. Kendra Keranen drove in three runs in the first game, and Emily Erkkila struck out nine for the win. The Lakes opened an early 5-1 lead in the nightcap, but Calumet responded with a power surge. Celia Peterson blasted two, two-run homers. Allison Spence added a solo shot, and winning pitcher Kayley King hit a grand slam.

Finlandia
Former Houghton High School standout Cale Markham will join the Finlandia hockey team next season. Markham helped lead the Gremlins to the state Division III championship games in 2012 and 2015. Two seasons ago, he played for the Tottenham, Ontario, Steam of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League. Last season, he split time between the Chatham Maroons and Lambton Shores Predators of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Arizona tonight. Justin Verlander will start against former Tiger Robbie Ray. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers also had yesterday off. They’ll begin a home series against the Boston Red Sox tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Drew Pomeranz.

Golf Clinic
UP Health System-Portage and the Portage Lake Golf Course will hold a free clinic to help you get ready for the summer golf season. The clinic will be held Thursday at 6:00 at the new Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center on US-41 in Calumet. Learn proper warm-up techniques and receive swing tips.
