Tigers Fall Late To Beat Jays
Max Scherzer pitched eight dominant innings yesterday, and turned a 2-1 lead over to closer Joe Nathan. Nathan gave up the tying run on an rbi single by Dioner Navarro… then Joba Chamberlain gave up the game-winner in the 10th… as the Tigers suffered a 3-2 loss. Both Detroit runs scored in the sixth inning on a double by Victor Martinez.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Toronto this afternoon. David Price will start against Mark Buehrle. Hear the first pitch at 1:07 on AM 1400, WCCY.

The Royals won their sixth straight game yesterday, so Detroit’s lead over Kansas City in the American League Central Division is now just one-and-a-half games.

Tigers’ reliever Joakim Soria left yesterday’s game with tightness in his left side. Soria relieved Nathan in the ninth, and worked out of a jam to keep the score tied. The injury occurred as he threw a warm-up pitch before the 10th inning. He’ll be evaluated today. Reliever Luke Putkonen has begun throwing fastballs off a mound, as he continues to rehab from elbow inflammation that has sidelined him since mid-April. If things go well, there is a chance he could rejoin the team before the end of the season.

Brewers Shut Down Dodgers
Mike Fiers came up from the minors, and pitched eight strong innings yesterday, as the Brewers defeated the Dodgers 4-1. Fiers gave up a run on just three hits in his fill-in start for the injured Matt Garza. Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Dodgers again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will start against Clayton Kershaw.

Saint Louis and Pittsburgh both lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division is now two-and-a-half games over the Pirates, and three games over the Cardinals.

Lions Edge Browns in Pre-Season Play
Kellen Moore’s touchdown pass with 1:07 to go lifted the Detroit Lions to a 13-12 victory over the Browns in exhibition play last night. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford played just one series, completing two of four passes. Receiver Calvin Johnson did not play at all. Projected backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky struggled, connecting on just 12 of 23 for 89 yards.

The Lions continue their exhibition season Friday night at Oakland.

Pack Falls to Titans
The Packers opened their exhibition schedule with a 20-16 loss at Tennessee. With Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy and Jordy Nelson on the bench, Matt Flynn led Green Bay to a touchdown on the opening drive. Scott Tolzien directed a similar drive to open the second half. Tennessee came back late in the game to earn the win.

The Packers play at Saint Louis on Saturday.
