City Mulls Changing Stop Signs On Houghton Avenue

The Houghton City Council is considering removing or reorienting stop signs on Houghton Avenue to make it easier for bicyclists.

The route has been designated for bikes but the series of east-west stop signs reduces the flow of pedaling traffic.

The proposal by the Bike and Pedestrian Committee includes turning at least some of the stop signs on Houghton Avenue north and south to create a thoroughfare for bicyclists.

One of the concerns of doing so is that vehicles traveling uphill during the winter would have to stop.

A public hearing is scheduled for May 10th.
