Tigers Blanked, Crew Sweeps – Thursday Sports Wrap

Norris

MLB
The night after they scored 19 runs,  the Detroit Tigers were shut out by the Seattle Mariners 8-0 last evening. Detroit managed just four hits in the game. Meanwhile, Tigers’ manager Brad Ausmus pulled struggling starter Daniel Norris in the fifth inning, after Norris had thrown 104 pitches. Norris gave up nine hits, and was charged with four runs. Anibal Sanchez gave up the other four runs in relief.

The Tigers host the Mariners again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will pitch against Hisashi Iwakuma. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Arcia

The Milwaukee Brewers completed a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds with a 9-4 victory yesterday. Orlando Arcia homered, and Jett Bandy had three hits. Wily Peralta gave up four runs over five innings, but got the win. The Brewers have today off, and host the Atlanta Braves tomorrow night. Chase Anderson will start against Bartolo Colon.

Milwaukee slugger Eric Thames left yesterday’s game in the eighth inning with tightness in his left hamstring. After the game, he said he hoped to be back in the lineup on Friday.

High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– The Hancock at Houghton doubleheader was rained out. It has been rescheduled to tomorrow.

Today, weather permitting…
– Baraga visits L’Anse.
– The Lake Linden-Hubbell doubleheader at Calumet has been postponed because of poor field condition. No make-up date has been announced.

In track, Calumet, and Houghton will be among the teams competing at the Negaunee Invitational.

In golf, several teams will compete at the L’Anse Invitational.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit.  Patrick Miles comes from Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah.

NHL
The second round of the NHL playoffs opened last night…
– The Predators edged the Blues 4-3.
– The Oilers defeated the Ducks 5-3.

– The Penguins face the Capitals
– The Senators face the Rangers.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– The Wizards got past the Hawks 103-99. Washington leads that series 3-2.
– The Celtics downed the Bulls 108-97. Boston leads that set 3-2.

Tonight…
– The Raptors take on the Bucks. Toronto leads that series 3-2.
– The Spurs meet the Grizzlies. San Antonio leads that set 3-2.

NFL
The first round of the National Football League draft will be held tonight. The Cleveland Brown will pick first, followed by the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears. The Detroit Lions have the 21st pick, and the Green Bay Packers have the 29th. The draft will continue with rounds two and three tomorrow night, and the final rounds on Saturday.

The Packers signed six-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Jahri Evans to a free agent contract yesterday. He’ll fill the hole that was created when the Lions signed T.J. Lang.

Our high school spring sports coverage will begin Wednesday, as the Houghton softball team plays a doubleheader at Hancock. Pregame coverage will begin around 3:45 on Kbear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
