Houghton Sweeps Early Invitational Track Meet – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB
The Detroit Tigers exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning, and clobbered the Seattle Mariners 19-9 last night. The big inning came after Detroit had already chased Seattle ace Felix Hernandez by scoring seven runs over the first four innings. James McCann, Justin Upton, Alex Avila and Mikie Mahtook homered. Ian Kinsler had four hits, and drove in four runs. Jordan Zimmermann gave up five runs over six innings, but got the win.

Thames

The Tigers host the Mariners again tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against James Paxton. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Eric Thames homered again, as the Milwaukee Brewers pounded the Cincinnati Reds 9-1 last night. Thames’ 11th home run of the month set a Brewers record. Hernán Pérez also homered, and added a pair of triples. Zach Davies pitched five shutout innings to earn the win. The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against Rookie Davis.

High School
In high school baseball yesterday, L’Anse took two from Jeffers, winning the first game 4-3 in seven innings, and taking the nightcap 6-5.

In high school softball today, weather permitting, Hancock plays at Houghton.

The Houghton boys and girls swept the Early Invitational meet at Lake Linden yesterday. The host Lakes finished second on each side. In the girls meet, Hancock was third, followed by Chassell, Calumet, Dollar Bay and Baraga. In the boys meet, Calumet was third, followed by Hancock, Dollar Bay, Chassell and Baraga.

Among the girls highlights, Houghton won all the relays. Houghton’s Kendra Monette won the 100-meter dash and the shot put. Lake Linden’s Laura Lyons won the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Among the boys highlights, Clayten Sayen of Houghton won the 400-meter and 3200-meter runs. Calumet’s Jesse Helminen took the shot put and the discus throw. Full results are here.

The Calumet boys golf team won the Norway Invitational yesterday, edging out Negaunee by two strokes. Wyatt Tuoriniemi and Landon Johnson finished in a tie for fifth place individually to lead the Copper Kings.

In the NBA playoffs last night…
– The Rockets advanced with a 105-99 victory over the Thunder. Houston won that series 4-1.
– The Spurs defeated the Grizzlies 116-103. San Antonio leads that set 3-2.
– The Jazz got past the Clippers 96-92. Utah leads that series 3-2.

Tonight…
– The Bulls face the Celtics. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Wizards meet the Hawks. That set is tied 2-2.

Team CC
Team Copper Country will celebrate its national championship with a reception and spaghetti dinner fundraiser tonight at Dee Stadium. The event will run from 5:00 until 8:00, with a brief presentation at 6:30. You do not need to purchase a meal to attend. Members of Team Copper Country and the coaching staff are looking forward to thanking the Copper Country for the support they received during the recent state and national tournaments.
