Spring at the Calumet Public Library!

Spring events at the Calumet Public Library are underway.

They are gearing up for their annual used book sale, which will be on Saturday, June 24th.

But first, they need books!

After the first of May, books in good condition can be brought to the library.

They will also accept DVDs and CDs, but please bring only gently used items!

Aside from membership dues, this is the Friends of the Calumet Public Library’s primary fundraiser, and they hope to have great success again this year!

If you are interested in helping, come to the next Friends meeting on Tuesday, May 9th and find out how to get involved or sign up at the library.

“The Aboriginals Arise: Spring Wildflowers of the Keweenaw Peninsula,” by Harvey Desnick

Spring is the time to find the true natives of the Keweenaw Peninsula!  Enjoy magnificent images of these forest beauties and learn about the many native wildflowers that bloom in April and May into June.  You may even be inspired to trek the woods in search of your own discoveries.   Presented by Harvey Desnick, photographer, author, and publisher of Keweenaw Wildflowers Blooming Seasons.

Books will be available for sale; proceeds will be used as a library fund raiser.

Wednesday, May 3^rd

“Sailing the Atlantic,” by Jim Hertel

6:30 – 8:00 pm

Open to the Public 

Every summer a handful of small sailboats head across the North Atlantic to ports in Europe.  Most find their way back across the mid-Atlantic, riding the trade winds to the Caribbean. Cruising sailors call this the “Atlantic Loop”. Jim Hertel will present the travels of s/v Siskawit, starting in Dollar Bay and completing a two year loop around the Atlantic.

Jim Hertel has been racing and cruising sailboats for well over a half-century, logging over 35,000 sea miles in the Great Lakes, Atlantic and Pacific oceans.  Jim and his wife, Peg, live in Houghton and enjoy sailing their current boat, Cadence, to Isle Royal and racing in Lake Superior.

“The Gift of Reading,” book making workshop by Susan Rosemurgy

Open to the Public

This book making workshop will be led by Calumet High School Art Teacher and Copper Country Reading Council Secretary, Susan Rosemurgy. Join us at the Calumet Public Library, Wednesday, May 10^th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, for an evening of book making. We will explore different book binding techniques and themes; tools and materials will be made available to everyone.  Make and take your own book nested in origami gift boxes, ready for you to give the gift of reading!  This program is suitable for all ages.

Used Book Sale
Saturday, June 24th
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
CLK Multi-Purpose Room
Open to the public
Proceeds go to support efforts of the Friends of the Calumet Public Library

Sponsored by the Friends of the Calumet Public Library, the used book sale on Saturday, June 24th is the organization’s annual fund raiser.  Featuring a wide variety of books, CDs and DVDs, the collection will be on sale from 10:00 – 3:00 at the CLK Multi-purpose room located down the hall from the library.  (When entering the building from the library parking lot, turn left and the multi-purpose room will be a few feet down the hall on your left.) The book sale is scheduled during Calumet’s PastyFest celebration – family fun for everyone – another reason to enjoy the day’s festivities!

Proceeds from this fundraiser go to sponsor library services and programs not provided for by the general library budget.  In 2016-2017, funds were used to purchase Mango Languages (a world language teaching program available to all library patrons), large print books, multiple titles for our Red Jacket Readers book club, and many new books including additions to the children’s, YA, and adult collections.  Funding also helps bring evening programs to the library throughout the year.

Red Jacket Readers book club discussion of  Wolf’s Mouth, by John Smolens

Open to the Public

In 1944, Italian officer Captain Francesco Verdi is captured by Allied forces and shipped to Camp Au Train, a POW camp in the Upper Peninsula.  In Wolf’s Mouth, this tale of fiction traces his experiences at the camp through his escape and relocation in Detroit – across time and over continents.  John Smolens, author of several books, is a professor at Northern Michigan University.

Join the Red Jacket Readers as we discuss Wolf’s Mouth, the first book of our series for 2017 – the book club is open to everyone.  The library has multiple copies of the book to check out, and it is also available for purchase in local stores.
