Team CC
Team Copper Country advanced to the quarterfinals of the 18U Tier Two national tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Foothills Flyers from Littleton, Colorado, on Saturday. Team CC fell behind early, after giving up their first goal of the tourney seven minutes into the first period. They responded quickly. Jacob Kruse tied the contest less than a minute later. Alex Nordstrom found the net a few minutes later to give Team CC a lead it would not relinquish. Rory Anderson and Kevin Bostwick added second-period goals, and Jed Pietila and Ed Beiring tacked on insurance tallies in the third period. The Flyers found the net again in the closing minutes. Kruse and Dawson McKay had two assists. Dawson Kero stopped 12 shots, as Team CC outshot the Flyers 41-14. Team CC will take on Team Ohio in the quarterfinals this morning at 11:00. Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team split a doubleheader at the University of Chicago Saturday. The Lions dropped the first game 13-2. After falling behind 3-0 in the second game, the Finns bounced back to take a 7-3 victory. Patrick Coles had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Cole Howard recovered from the shaky start to pitch a complete game. Those two teams play another doubleheader in Chicago today.
NCAA
Denver edged Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 in the championship game of the NCAA Division One Hockey Tournament Saturday night. Jarid Lukosevicius’ hat trick in the second period provided all of the Pioneers’ scoring.
MLB
Jordan Zimmermann turned in a strong start, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1 Saturday. Zimmermann gave up one run on four hits. Shane Greene, Kyle Ryan and Justin Wilson each added a scoreless inning of relief. Wilson earned the save. Jose Iglesias and James McCann homered for Detroit. The Tigers host the Red Sox again this afternoon. Daniel Norris will start against former Tiger Rick Porcello. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Ryan arrived at the ballpark just before the game, after driving from Columbus, Ohio. He had been in Florida, where his wife had given birth to their first child. His flight back to Detroit was delayed, then canceled. He found a flight to Columbus, rented a car, and arrived in Detroit just in time for the first pitch.
The Milwaukee Brewers suffered an 11-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs Saturday. Tommy Milone’s first start of the season was a short one – he gave up four runs over four innings. Still, he left with the game tied. Jhan Mariñez took the loss, giving up three runs in relief. Brent Suter was charged with four runs after he took over for Mariñez. Jonathan Villar, Nick Franklin and Jett Bandy homered for Milwaukee. The Brewers entertain the Chicago Cubs again this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Jake Arrieta.
After the game, the Brewers optioned Suter back to Colorado Springs.
Milwaukee played yesterday’s game without outfielder Ryan Braun, who experienced stiffness in his back. He’s considered day-to-day.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime Saturday night. Frans Nielsen and Dylan Larkin scored for the Wings. Petr Mrazek stopped 27 shots, and took the loss. Detroit will play its final game of the season, and its final game at Joe Louis Arena, against the New Jersey Devils today. Faceoff will be at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Memphis tonight.
