Tigers Fall to Yankees
The Tigers scored a run in the first inning, but were quiet the rest of the game, and lost to the Yankees 5-1 last night. Justin Verlander gave up just two runs over seven innings, and took the loss. New York’s final three runs came off Blaine Hardy in the eighth inning

Kansas City won again yesterday, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central Division has shrunk to just three-and-a-half games.
Brewers Lose to Giants
The Giants scored three runs off Yovani Gallardo in the first inning, and cruised to a 7-4 victory over the Brewers last night. Gallardo completed just four innings. Milwaukee came back, and closed the gap to just one run. San Francisco put the game away with three runs in the eighth.
The Brewers conclude that set against the Giants this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against Jake Peavy.
Saint Louis lost, and Pittsburgh won… so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division is one game over the Cardinals, and a game-and-a-half over the Pirates.
Twilight League Play-in Tonight
The Copper Country Twilight League playoffs open tonight, when Pat’s Foods and Wolverine-Orbit meet at the Wolverine field. The winner of that game will begin a best-of-three semifinal series against regular season champ BlueSky Health Tuesday evening. Toivola and Stanton will met in the other semifinal series next week.
WCHA’s Sauer Elected to Hockey Hall
Longtime WCHA coach Jeff Sauer is one of four members of this year’s United State Hockey Hall of Fame class. Sauer played at Colorado College in the 60s… then served as the head coach there for 10 seasons. He then spent 20 seasons as head coach at the University of Wisconsin, where his teams won two national titles. He is currently a special assistant to the commissioner of the WCHA. Former Detroit Red Wing Brian Rafalski is also a member of this year’s class. Rafelski grew up in the Detroit area. He spent his final four professional seasons with the Wings, and helped them win the 2008 Stanley Cup. The other members of this year’s class are women’s hockey pioneer Karyn Bye Dietz, and veteran coach Lou Vairo. Find out more about the new Hall of Fame members here.
Houghton Football Open House Tonight
Students who wish to play middle school, junior varsity or varsity football at Houghton this fall are encouraged to attend an open house tonight at 7:00 at the high school gym. Equipment for the Houghton Varsity and JV football teams will be issued Saturday morning at the school. Varsity players should report at 10:00, and JV players at 11:00. Practices start on Monday afternoon at 4:30 for both JV and Varsity. Equipment handout and practices for 7th and 8th graders will be determined once school begins. All athletes must have a physical before being allowed to practice.
