Houghton Makes Change To Help Make City Look Less Trashy

The City of Houghton has been running into problems with people putting their trash out too early.

A notice was sent out to city trash customers on Shelden and Montezuma Avenues between Bridge Street and Franklin Square.

The notice said problems arise when the wind blows the bags around or they get broken, plus just an overall trashy look to the city on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Trash had been required to be out by 7am on Tuesdays, making it difficult for businesses that don’t open until later in the day to get their trash out without putting it out the day before.

Waste Management does not pick up the trash on Sheldon or Montezuma Avenues until after 9am, after the morning traffic clears.

Therefore, the city is asking that trash customers in this area only put their trash out the morning of by 9am.

This change does not apply to customers in the rest of the city.
