Italian Hall Tragedy Victims’ Memorial To Be Ordered

An effort to erect a memorial with the names of the victims of the 1913 Italian Hall tragedy is one step closer to being put in place.

The Calumet Village Council approved a committee recommendation to order a seven foot by four foot slab of black granite.

It will take about three months for the slab to arrive.

The names of the victims as researched by the Houghton-Keweenaw Genealogical Society will then be engraved in the stone.

The $14,000 monument will be paid for in part by a donation from the Genealogical Society, the village and contributions from members of the community.

The memorial is expected to be dedicated this summer.
