Tigers Handcuffed by Yankees
Max Scherzer pitched seven effective innings, but the Tigers couldn’t support him, and lost to the Yankees 2-1 last night. Detroit had a chance to take an early lead when they loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. Alex Avila and Eugenio Suarez struck out to end the threat. The Yankees scored both of their runs in the third… but could have scored more, if not for a highlight-reel diving catch in center field by Ezekiel Carerra with the bases loaded.
The Tigers continue that series at Yankee Stadium tonight. David Price will make his first start for Detroit. Hiroki Kuroda will counter for New York. Hear the first pitch at 7:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City had yesterday off, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central Division falls to four-and-a-half games.
Tigers’ shortstop Eugenio Suarez sprained his knee while stealing second base in the fifth inning of last night’s game. Andrew Romine replaced him. Suarez will be evaluated in New York today. Manager Brad Ausmus hopes the injury might be similar to one Suarez suffered earlier in the season, that kept him out of the lineup for only a couple of days.
Brewers Host Giants Tonight
The Brewers had yesterday off, and host the Giants tonight. Jimmy Nelson will start against Tim Lincecum.
Saint Louis and Pittsburgh were also idle yesterday, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division remains at a game over the Cardinals, and a game-and-a-half over the Pirates.
