High School
In high school girls regional semifinal basketball play last night…
– Kenzie Wilkinson’s put-back of Natalie Ryckman’s missed three-point attempt at the buzzer gave Kalkaska 58-57 a victory over Houghton. The Gremlins opened up an early 11-point lead, but the Blazers closed the gap by halftime. The game was nip-and-tuck through the second half. Kara Pietila gave Houghton a one-point lead with 22-seconds remaining, setting up Kalkaska’s final shot. Sloane Zenner scored 15 for the Gremlins. Alexa Clouthier shoots for the Jets.

– In Class C, Calumet advanced with a 60-49 victory over Negaunee. Hailey Wickstrom had 19 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocked shots for the Copper Kings. Calumet will face St. Ignace tomorrow at 7:00 at Marquette in a rematch of last year’s regional final. The Saints advanced with a 67-58 victory over West Iron County. In boys district tournament play tonight…
– In Class C, Hancock and Calumet will play for the district title. Our broadcast from Calumet will begin around 6:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
– In Class D at Baraga, Dollar Bay will face Jeffers at 6:00; Chassell will take on Lake Linden-Hubbell at 7:30.

The high school hockey tournament continues tonight, when Calumet takes on Big Rapids in the state quarterfinals at Sault Ste. Marie. Our broadcast will start around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Froelich

Finlandia
Finlandia University softball player Makenna Lloyd and baseball player Aaron Froelich have been named Players of the Week by the Association of Division Three Independents. Lloyd scored nine runs, drove in 17 runs and batted .400 on the Lions’ spring Florida trip. Froelich threw just the second shutout in Finlandia baseball history, and is the first Lion ever to be named Baseball Player of the Week.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost their third straight game last night, falling 3-2 at Toronto. Gustav Nyquist scored both Detroit goals. Petr Mrazek took the loss. The Wings skate at Boston tonight. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons play at Indiana tonight.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ spring training woes continued yesterday with an 11-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Justin Verlander scuffled a bit, but gave up just one run over three innings. Bullpen candidates Justin Wilson, Chad Bell, Blaine Hardy and Daniel Stumpf all struggled. The Tigers have today off.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off. They’ll split their squad for games against the Dodgers and White Sox this afternoon.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers will open next season without defensive tackle Letroy Guion. He’s been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly signed a two-year deal with restricted free agent defensive tackle Khyri Thornton.
