LAURIUM, Mich. – Calumet High School (CHS) and Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital joined in a special celebration at the Copper Kings girls varsity basketball game Thursday. Prior to tip-off, students presented Aspirus Keweenaw with a $5,000 check – the total amount of money raised during this year’s Jersey Fund.
“This event continues to get bigger and better every year, thanks to the outstanding efforts of the students,” said Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital Marketing Logistics Coordinator Jenn Jenich-Laplander. “It gives them the opportunity to do something special for patients who are going through treatments for cancer.”
Many community partners contribute to the success of the Jersey Fund. This year’s sponsors include: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Calumet Machine, Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home, Miron Construction Co., Inc., Pat’s Foods, Range Bank, River Valley Bank, and U.P. Engineers and Architects, Inc.
The Jersey Fund effort between CHS and Aspirus was created to help bring extra comfort to oncology patients while they receive care at Aspirus. Warming blankets and iPads are some of the comfort items Jersey Fund proceeds have purchased in previous years. The funds are raised through student-organized activities, jersey silent auctions and special raffle drawings.
“This year’s effort was greatly enhanced by participation from the Washington Middle School and the Calumet Elementary School. Students at all three levels really care about their community and are always willing to help,” said Calumet High School Athletic Director Sean Jacques. “Aspirus has been very supportive of our efforts and we are very grateful to have the opportunity to give something back to Aspirus and the people they serve in our community.”
