MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team had to settle for a split in their weekend series against Northern Michigan University, falling to the Wildcats 5-3  Saturday night. The Huskies got off to a quick lead when Joel L’Esperance scored 65 seconds into the game. Northern tied the contest late in the first period, and took the lead early in the second. The teams swapped goals through the second stanza, and entered the third period tied 3-3. NMU’s Shane Sooth scored the game-winner four minutes into the third period, and the Wildcats added an empty-netter in the final minute to seal the win. MTU outshot NMU 41-22. Tech won Friday’s game 3-2.

Saturday’s loss did not affect MTU’s second-seeding in the upcoming Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The win did clinch the eighth-seed for the Wildcats, who will play at top-seed Bemidji State in the opening round.  In the other opening round matches, third-seed Minnesota State will host sixth-seed Alaska, and fifth-seed Ferris State travels to fourth-seed Bowling Green.
