MTU Men’s, Women’s Hoops Sweep NMU – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In hockey last night, the Calumet shut out Marquette 3-0. Trevor Salata’s goal just 97 seconds into the first period proved to be the game-winner. Trevor Johnson scored in the second period, and Ed Beiring added a power play score in the third. Nick Voelker stopped 16 shots for the shutout. The win earned the Copper Kings a share of the Great Lakes Conference title, along with Hancock. Calumet and Hancock will face each other in the Division Three tournament opener Monday night. In girls high school basketball last night…
– Calumet shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 63-32.
– Chassell got past Hancock 47-41. Maija Sebbas scored 27 for the Bulldogs. Milly Allen had 21 for the Panthers.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Ewen-Trout Creek 45-38 in overtime.
– Jeffers edged L’Anse 61-58 in overtime. Julia Nordstrom led the Jets with 34 points. Bailey Froberg scored 16 for the Purple Hornets.
– Baraga overpowered Watersmeet 82-37. Carsyn Osterman scored 26 for the Vikings. Bethany Baldwin scored 30, and became the Nimrods all-time leading scorer.

There is one final regular-season girls game tonight – Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Watersmeet.

Anderson

MTU/NMU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams closed their regular seasons with wins over rival Northern Michigan last night. The women opened their game with a 15-2 run, and were never challenged en route to a lopsided 72-37 victory. Brenna Heise and Morgan Anderson each scored 17 for the Huskies. The Huskies will host Ohio Dominican in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday. NMU will open the playoffs at Saginaw Valley State.

Monroe

The men’s team pulled out a much closer 85-80 victory over the Wildcats. The game was tight throughout. Jordan Chartier and Tommy Lucca combined for five free throws in the final 41 seconds to preserve the win. Six Huskies scored in double figures, led by Kyle Monroe with 19 points. The win earned Tech a home berth in the GLIAC playoffs. The Huskies will host Wayne State on Tuesday. The NMU men’s team did not qualify for the playoffs.

The Michigan Tech and NMU hockey teams conclude their regular seasons with a home and home series this weekend. Tonight’s game will be in Marquette. Tomorrow’s game will start at 7:07 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team opens its season this weekend by hosting the Dome Tournament in Marquette. The Lions will face Northland College this evening at 6:00, and Carroll University tonight at 8:00. Tomorrow, Finlandia will play Edgewood College at 10:00, and Marian University at noon.

The Finlandia baseball team begins its spring southern schedule Sunday, with a game against Hanover College in Orlando.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers travel to Mosinee for games tonight and tomorrow night. The Calumet Wolverines visit the Marquette Mutineers tonight and tomorrow night.

Caldwell-Pope

NBA
The Detroit Pistons rallied from 18 points down, and edged the Charlotte Hornets 114-108 in overtime last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 33 points. He forced overtime with a three-point shot with 18 seconds remaining in regulation, and hit another critical three-pointer late in overtime to seal the win. The Pistons entertain the Boston Celtics Sunday. Tip-off is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers defeated Florida State University 8-0 in their annual spring exhibition game yesterday. The Tigers open their Grapefruit League schedule against the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. Our broadcast from Lakeland, Florida, will begin at 1:25 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
