Houghton Girls Celebrate UP Swim Crown – Monday Sports Wrap

High School
The Houghton girls swim team is celebrating an Upper Peninsula championship. The Gremlins edged Marquette 280-247 Saturday. Houghton led by just one point heading into the final event – the 400-yard freestyle relay. They claimed the event, and the title. Tessa Meyer won the 100-yard butterfly, and Samantha Olson took the 200-yard freestyle.

The boys placed second to Marquette. Sal Sharp and Andrew Garland finished first and second in the diving competition. Peter Jaszczak won the 100-yard butterfly, and set a new school record. Link to full tournament results here.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings scored three goals in the third period, and skated past the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 yesterday afternoon. Five different Wings scored. Petr Mrazek made 34 saves. The Wings host the New York Islanders tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
