Public universities could get a 2.5 percent funding boost from the state under a new budget proposal unveiled by Governor Rick Snyder.
Snyder says half of the increase would be guaranteed with the rest based on a performance formula.
Universities that increase tuition by more than 3.8 percent would lose their performance funding.
The increase would restore overall funding for Michigan’s public universities to their pre 2011 funding levels, the year Snyder took office and cut higher education funding by 15 percent.
