Calumet Sweeps Jesuit; Kangas Powers Bulldogs Past Divine Child – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey…
– Calumet rode a strong defensive effort to a 2-1 victory over U of D Jesuit, and a sweep of the Miner’s Helmet series Saturday night. The Copper Kings spotted the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the second period. Brent Loukus tied the game with his fourth goal of the weekend early in the third period. Rory Anderson scored the game-winner with an assist from Loukus several minutes later. The Calumet defense held Jesuit to just 12 shots on goalie Nick Voelker. After losing their first four games in November, Calumet has won eight of 10. The Kings won Friday night’s game 7-2.
– At the Sault Lions Showcase, Hancock edged Dearborn Divine Child 4-3 Saturday. Lance Kangas had two goals and an assist for Hancock. Brody Budweg and Ted Randell each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Nordstrom had two assists. Dawson Kero stopped 32 shots in net to earn the win. The Bulldogs fell to Port Huron Northern 3-2 Friday evening.

For the second night in a row, the Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a tie with Alaska-Anchorage. Saturday’s game wound up at 1-1 after the regulation overtime. Unlike Friday, though, the Huskies won Saturday’s shootout to claim the extra WCHA standings point. Chris Gerrie scored his first goal as a Husky late in the second period to tie the game. Jake Lucchini scored in the shootout. Angus Redmond made 20 saves to earn the win in net. The Huskies and Seawolves played to a 3-3 regulation tie Friday night, with the Seawolves claiming the shootout point.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team went cold in the third quarter at Saginaw Valley State Saturday, and suffered a 79-67 loss to the Cardinals. SVSU outscored MTU 22-10 in that third quarter. Morgan Anderson led Tech with 19 points.

The MTU men’s team stunned the 19th-ranked Cardinals 93-72 Saturday. The Huskies built a 15-point halftime lead, and maintained the pressure through the second half. Tommy Lucca led Tech with 29 points.

NMU
For the second straight night, the Northern Michigan University hockey team battled to a 1-1 regulation draw with Lake Superior State Saturday night. The Wildcats won the extra WCHA standings point in the shootout. The tie gave the Wildcats possession of the Cappo Cup. In the four-game series, each team earned a win last weekend, along with this weekend’s ties. NMU finished with a 10-9 total goals advantage in the four games. Shootout goals and standing points do not count towards determining the Cup winner.

The NMU women’s basketball team lost a 55-53 heartbreaker to Wayne State Saturday. The Wildcats men’s team pulled out a 75-71 victory over the Warriors.

Finlandia
St. Norbert scored three times in the first period, and blanked the Finlandia University men’s hockey team 3-0 Saturday. The Knights outshot Finlandia Lions New Logothe Lions 17-4 in that first period. Alec Rounds made 32 saves while taking the loss in net. Finlandia lost to St. Norbert 7-1 Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 6-0 at Marian University Saturday night. Sarah Gundry made 37 saves, and took the loss in goal. Those teams play at Fond du Lac again today.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team faded down the stretch, and lost 67-47 at Northland College Saturday. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila led the Lions with 19 points. Houghton’s Kelsie Richards added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Finlandia men’s team fell to Northland 83-72. Freshman Geoff Smart scored 32 points for the Lions, and Marcus Geralds added 25. The men’s team plays at Lakeland College today.

Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureThe Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Marquette Mutineers 6-3 Saturday night. Goals by Neeco Belanger, Nick Harris and Cody Sivonen gave the Pioneers a 3-1 lead early in the second period. Marquette then scored five unanswered goals off Trevor Lowney to claim the win. The Pioneers had only 10 players for the game. With a fuller roster, Houghton defeated Marquette 7-3 on Friday.

The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fond du Lac Bears 10-5 Saturday evening. The Wolverines edged the Mosinee Papermakers 5-4 Friday night.

The Detroit Red Wings snapped their three-game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night. The Wings broke open a 3-3 tie with a three-goal third period. Six different players scored for the Wings, led by Gustav Nyquist, who had a goal and two assists. Jared Coreau made 28 saves to earn the win in net. The Wings will host Montreal Monday afternoon at 3:00. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons face the Lakers at Los Angeles tonight.

NFL
Green Bay Packers LogoNew England and Atlanta advanced to the NFL Conference Championships with victories yesterday. The Patriots eliminated the Texans 34-16. The Falcons ousted the Seahawks 36-20. In the Divisional round today, Pittsburgh plays at Kansas City at 8:20 tonight. The Packers kick off at Dallas at 4:40 this afternoon. Hear all the NFL playoff games up through the Super Bowl on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Packers will play today without Jordy Nelson, who broke two ribs in last week’s victory over the Giants. See the full injury report here.
