Throwing Trash In Recycling Area Is Considered Littering

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners may have found a solution to the problem of people throwing household garbage into the recycling area of the Houghton County Transfer Station.

The act is considered littering and is civil infraction punishable by a fine and even up to three months in jail.

Sheriff Brian McLean says the point is to discourage people from putting the trash in the recycling area, but his deputies will write tickets if they need to.
