Caution Urged on Snowmobile Trails

Snow has been plentiful on the Keweenaw Peninsula, but the Michigan Department of Natural Resources says some snowmobile trails in other part of the Upper Peninsula are in questionable shape. DNR trails specialist Paul Gaberdiel says last weekend’s warm weather caused two problems for trails that didn’t have a good base. First, the snow levels dropped to potentially dangerous levels, exposing rocks and other hazards. Second, swampy areas that hadn’t completely frozen became soft. Several groomers have become stuck in the mud. If you’re heading out this weekend, check trail conditions first. The Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that trails on the peninsula are in fair to good condition. Baraga County trails are experiencing some of the problems the DNR has cautioned about, with fair to poor conditions reported.
