Coreau Earns First NHL Win as Wings Take Shootout – Saturday Sports Wrap

Jared Coreau earned his first NHL victory, as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Florida Panthers 4-3 in a shootout Friday night. the former NMU Wildcat was brought up from Grand Rapids to fill in for Jimmy Howard, who will miss at least a month because of a knee injury. He made 31 saves in his second NHL start. Drew Miller, Anthony Mantha and Frans Nielsen scored for Detroit. The Wings will host the Buffalo Sabres Tuesday. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons’ losing streak reached five games Friday night, as they fell to the Golden State Warriors 119-113. Unlike the previous losses, though, this one was hard-fought against one of the league’s best teams. The Warriors didn’t put it away until the final 90 seconds. Jon Leuer replaced Tobias Harris in the starting lineup. Harris came off the bench to lead the team with 26 points in 32 minutes. The Pistons will host the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday night.

Most of this weekend’s NFL games will be played today. The Green Bay Packers entertain the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a full participant in practice this week, but running back James Starks is still recovering from a concussion, and will miss the game. See the injury list here.

Alex Avila is returning to the Detroit Tigers. He’s signed a one-year, two-million dollar deal to serve as the team’s backup catcher. Avila spent last season with the White Sox, after a half-dozen seasons in the Motor City.

Northern Michigan University has named two new head coaches. Sonia Basma will take over the women’s soccer team. She was head coach at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts last season, and was an assistant coach there the previous year. Rashinda Reed is the new volleyball coach. She was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham last season.
