Portage Health Auxiliary Grant Will Help CCISD Students Compete In Student Health Occupation Competition

The Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 20, 2016.

Amanda Hermanson and Lorie Maki, CTE teachers for Health Careers and Certified Nurse Assistant, gave updates to the Board.

The teachers informed the Board that their students wrote a grant application and were successful in attaining a $2,000 grant from the Portage Health Auxiliary.

The grant funds will be used to help pay for expenses for their Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competitions.

Approximately 80 students will be competing in Regionals (U.P. wide) in January.

Students who qualify in the top three in the competition of their choice will qualify for State Competition.

Students who qualify in the top two in each state category move on to a national competition.

Mrs. Hermason and Mrs. Maki stated that they have very motivated students who are working hard on fundraising and preparing for the HOSA competition.

The teachers also informed the Board that the HOSA students always look for opportunities to give back to the community and complete many service projects within the local area.

Right now the HOSA group is working on a spaghetti dinner and silent auction in January to benefit a local family with major medical needs.

After the presentation, Superintendent George Stockero read an email message from a former student who had just officially become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

In the email, the student thanked her teachers for all the hours of instruction and encouragement.

The former student went on to say that the ISD CTE program was so extensive that even a year and a half after graduating, she remembered all her training.

Stockero echoed the praise of Mrs. Hermanson and Mrs. Maki, stating that, “The two teachers work very hard to provide the necessary skills to our students and this email is just one example demonstrating their effectiveness.”  “We are very fortunate to have two such strong instructors,” Stockero added.

In other action, the Board:

  • Hired Shauna Wunrow-Brushafer as a Teacher for the Mild Cognitive Program at Hancock Middle School.
  • Accepted with regret the resignation of Kayleen Anderson, Instructional Aide in the Elementary Social Skills Teaching Program.
  • Hired Judith Ruonavaara as an Instructional/Bus Aide for the Middle School/High School Social Skills Teaching Program and Kitchen Helper at the Learning Center.
  • Hired Robert Mueller as a Senior Helpdesk Support Technician for REMC 1.
  • Hired Kyle Timmerman as a System Engineer for REMC 1.
  • Approved the first adoption of proposed new, revised and replacement NEOLA policies.
