Houghton Deals With Winter Problems

Winter arrived in the area all of sudden this past week, but the City of Houghton has fully implemented plans to battle it.  City manager Eric Waara reported at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting that city crews have been kept busy clearing the streets.

In preparation for the upcoming Michigan Tech Winter Carnival Feb. 8-11, the people who built a snow house for the city in the past will be contacted to see what needs to be done this carnival.

Waara also reported that running water in city residences to prevent freeze-ups has not started.  It will be determined when that practice might begin at a later date.

Members of the city beautification committee gave a report on what projects were completed last summer.  That included planting flowers at Franklin Square and other locations in the city.

A letter from Dave Mickelsen of Hancock was read regarding regulations being changed on snowmobile, dirt bike and ATV trails.  Mickelsen is asking a meeting be set up with State Rep. Scott Dianda to review the changes for the sake of safety to landowners.

Police chief John Donnelly reported the new traffic light near Wal-Mart has caused some problems for truck drivers going uphill, but that no accidents have occurred.

In other business, the council:
* Scheduled a public hearing on Dec. 28 for a Rural Development grant for a new police car.
* OKd selling a used fire truck for a minimum of $5,000.
* Was told a Downtown Committee meeting will be held on Jan. 8.
