Portage LL Juniors Win District – Thursday Sports Wrap

Tigers, Brewers Resume Play Tomorrow
The Tigers return to action tomorrow at home against Cleveland. Anibal Sanchez will start against Trevor Bauer. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Tigers’ outfielder Andy Dirks has been pulled from his minor league rehab assignment at Lakeland because of inflammation in his lower back muscles. Dirks is recovering from back surgery he underwent this spring. There’s no estimate as to how long this latest setback will delay his return to the Tigers.

The Brewers resume play tomorrow night at Washington. Kyle Lohse will start against Stephen Strasburg.

Portage Lake Junior Little League 2014-07Portage Lake Juniors Win District
Portage Lake scored eight runs in the fifth inning on Wednesday, and defeated Ishpeming 12-3 in the Little League Baseball Juniors District Tournament final. Six players on manager Jim Cortright’s team have now won five straight Little League District Championships… CORTRIGHT. Portage Lake advances to the Little League Junior State Sectional against Kingsford. The winner of that two-out-of-three match will advance to the state finals in Onsted. – Pat’s Foods downed Mattila Rock and Dock 14-2.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium… Pat’s Foods/ThermoAnalytics scored 11 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and defeated Osmose 32-31. Henry Baron had five hits for Pat’s. Ben Steber blasted three home runs… Logan Rastello hit two… and Charles Fraser added one. Nutini’s took an early lead, and held off Post 90/Lakes Lounge 20-15.
– At Hurontown… Bucko’s/Labatts shut down Auto Value 17-2. Steve Dunstan gave up just six hits to earn the win. Bucko’s then trounced The Marley Bar 36-3. Dunstan earned his second in of the night. Jack Benson homered and tripled. Kevin Tormala had five hits.
– At the Hancock Driving Park… the score of the game between North Pointe Trucking and The Goal Post was not posted. Erickson Crowley Peterson broke out the heavy lumber to beat 906/Pilgrim River Steakhouse 31-3. Buddy Londo and Erik Nettle each hit two home runs… Gavin Picciano, Drake Sullivan and Matt Turunen had one each. Jed Denomie gave up just five hits, and earned the win.

Armga Named Top Scholar-Athlete
Former Michigan Tech basketball player Austin Armga has been named the 2013-2014 GLIAC male “Scholar-Athlete of the Year” in voting by the league’s faculty athletics representatives. Armga posted a 3.78 grade point average in exercise science. Armga finished second in the nation in total points and was seven points shy of breaking Tech’s single season scoring mark during the 2013-14 campaign. Armga is now in the running for the Division II Conference Commissioners Association Regional “Scholar-Athlete of the Year” awards.

Lehtinen Named NMU Assistant Hockey Coach
Northern Michigan University has named Rob Lehtinen as assistant hockey coach. Lehtinen has served as NMU’s hockey operations manager the past four seasons. He played for the Wildcats from 2003 to 2007. He takes over for Joe Shawhan… who recently accepted the assistant coach’s job at Michigan Tech.

Stuckey Signs with Pacers
Former Detroit Pistons’ guard Rodney Stuckey has signed a one-year deal with the Pacers. Stuckey played seven seasons with Detroit… but did not fit into the Pistons’ plans under new coach Stan Van Gundy.

Kids’ Fishing Derby Saturday
The 10th annual Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held Saturday at the Swedetown ponds. Fishing starts at 10:00, with lunch at noon, and a chance to win prizes starting around 1:30 pm. Everything is free to the kids, including worms. Some loaner rods are available, but please bring your own if you can.
