High School
The Michigan high school football playoffs are underway…
– In Division Four, Escanaba entertains Whitehall this afternoon.
– In Division Five, Menominee trounced Kalkaska 41-13. The Maroons will play the winner of today’s game between Grayling and Kingsford next week in the district final.
– In Division Six, Negaunee defeated Charlevoix 28-7. The Miners will take on the winner of today’s contest between Calumet and Boyne City. That game will be played at 1:00 at Agassiz Field. Our pregame coverage will begin around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Division Seven, Iron Mountain advanced with a 46-32 victory over Gwinn. The Mountaineers will meet the winner of today’s game between Harbor Springs and Traverse City St. Francis next week in the district final.
– In Division Eight, Norway edged West Iron County 15-14. The Knights will face the winner of today’s match between Lake Linden-Hubbell and North Dickinson. That game kicks off at 1:00 at Warner Field. Our pregame coverage will start around 12:40 on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com. St. Ignace routed Hillman 55-20, and Newberry edged Gaylord St. Mary 16-14. The Saints and the Indians will meet for that district title next week.
– In eight-man play, North Central started its state title defense with a 64-0 shutout over Rapid River. Forest Park ousted Stephenson 60-22. The Jets and Trojans will meet in the regionals. Engadine eliminated Cedarville 38-30 in overtime. Pickford blanked Fife Lake Forest Area 53-0. Engadine and Pickford will play in the regionals next week.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team celebrated Hall of Fame night Friday by blanking Northern Michigan University 2-0 at MacInnes Arena. With members of the 1975 national championship team in the stands, Jake Lucchini and Jake Jackson scored for the Huskies. Freshman goaltender Angus Redmond stopped 19 shots in his first career start. The Huskies and Wildcats will conclude that home-and-home series tonight in Marquette.
The MTU football team hosts ninth-ranked Ashland this afternoon. This year’s Michigan Tech Hall of Fame class will be inducted at halftime, including football and track standout Bill Hauswirth, men’s basketball player JT Luginski, women’s basketball star Andrea Novak, Nordic skier Tom Wood, hockey players Brent Peterson and Scott White, and the 1974-75 Hockey Team.
The Tech soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Northern Michigan at Sherman Field. The Huskies will open the GLIAC tournament Tuesday at home against Ferris State. Kickoff is at 2:00.
The MTU women’s tennis team lost 5-1 to Tiffin in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament in Midland Friday evening. The Huskies will meet Wayne State in a consolation bracket match this afternoon.
The Huskies volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 (24-26, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25) match at Ferris State Friday night. MTU plays at Grand Valley State this afternoon.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Hillsdale today.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team opened its season with a 5-1 loss at Wisconsin-Stout Friday night. The Lions were outshot 46-15. Walker Enstad made 41 stops in goal. Finlandia plays at Wisconsin-Superior tonight.
The Finlandia women’s hockey squad took an early lead, but lost its season opener 2-1 at Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday night. Breanna Merriam made 43 saves to keep the Lions in the game. Those teams play again this afternoon in Eau Claire.
The Finlandia volleyball team lost 3-1 (7-25, 20-25, 19-25) at Maranatha Baptist University Friday night.
The Finlandia football team has the weekend off.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Boston Bruins tonight. The Wings have won six straight.
NBA
Tobias Harris scored 18 points, and Andre Drummond snared 20 rebounds Friday night, as the Detroit Pistons won their home opener 108-82 over the Orlando Magic Friday night. The Pistons will host the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday.
MLB
The Cleveland Indians stole the thunder in the first World Series game at Wrigley Field in 71 years Friday night by blanking the Chicago Cubs 1-0. Cleveland leads the Fall Classic two games to one. Game four will be played tomorrow night at Wrigley Field.
NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the Houston Texans for a 1:00 game on Sunday. Injured running backs Theo Riddick and Dwayne Washington are expected to play. Tight end Eric Ebron, Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and tackle Riley Reiff are among a half-dozen players listed as “questionable.” See the full injury report here.
