57th IFT Opens Today – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB: Tigers Fall to Rays
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoDrew Smyly struggled, and the Tigers lost to the Rays last night 6-3. Smyly allowed single runs in the third, fourth and fifth… and a pair of runs before leaving the game in the sixth.

The Tigers host the Rays again this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will face Chris Archer. Hear the first pitch at 4:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Kansas City won yesterday, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central is now four games.

Victor Martinez left last night’s game after re-aggravating the sore spot in his back. He could miss the next couple of games. Reliever Ian Kroll pitched a perfect inning for West Michigan as he began a rehab assignment last night. Kroll is scheduled to pitch again tomorrow. If all goes well, he could be reactivated on Tuesday. He’s been battling shoulder inflammation.

Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoBrewers Fall at Queen City
Kyle Lohse had a rare off-day, as the Brewers fell at Cincinnati 4-2 last night. Lohse allowed all four Reds’ runs over five innings. Milwaukee batters collected jusy six hits… one a home run by Jonathan Lucroy.

The Brewers continue that series at Cincinnati this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Homer Bailey.

The Cardinals won yesterday… so Milwaukee now leads the National League Central by four games.

The Brewers brought outfielder Logan Schafer up from Nashville to fill in for Khris Davis, who’s nursing a strained shoulder. Davis has not been placed on the disabled list… so utility player Elian Herrera was sent down to make room. Davis could return to the lineup as early as today.

Legwand Signs with Senators
Red Wings LogoFormer Detroit Red Wings’ forward David Legwand has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings acquired Legwand on March 5th from the Nashville Predators for forward Patrick Eves, a prospect, and a draft pick. Legwand will fill the void at center in Ottawa that was left by Jason Spezza, who was recently traded to Dallas.

International Frisbee Tournament Logo57th IFT Opens Today
The best Guts Frisbee players in the world have arrived in the Copper Country for the 57th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament. Preliminary rounds begin this morning at 9:00 at Agassiz Field… with the semifinals and finals scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Other highlights of the weekend include a free-style demonstration by the legendary Velasquez Brothers… and an attempt by a dog named Davy Whippet to break his own world record for the longest throw and catch by an animal.
