Protected Land Dedication Ceremony Today

The Keweenaw Land Trust, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources invite the public to a dedication ceremony today at 10am for lands acquired as part of the Abbaye Peninsula Huron Bay Conservation Initiative in Baraga County.

The project permanently protects nearly 1,400 acres and nearly a mile of Lake Superior shoreline.

These protected lands provide important wildlife habitat, help maintain air and water quality, and provide the public with scenic views, access and recreation opportunities.


Dedication ceremony set for protected Lake Superior coastal habitats

The Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invite the public to an Oct. 11 dedication ceremony for lands acquired as part of the Abbaye Peninsula – Huron Bay Conservation Initiative in Michigan’s UpperAn aerial view of the Abbaye Peninsula in Baraga County. With the support of numerous partner organizations, the project permanently protects 1,374 acres and nearly a mile of Lake Superior shoreline and was made possible by a USFWS National Coastal Wetlands Conservation program grant of $1 million in 2015, with over $1.1 million in matching funds provided by private foundations, individual donors and bargain sales offered by the landowners.

These protected lands provide important wildlife habitat, help maintain air and water quality, and provide the public with scenic views, access and recreation opportunities. The project will also provide abundant public recreation and education opportunities, and enhance regional tourism benefitting Upper Michigan’s economy.

The dedication ceremony will be held, rain or shine, at 10 a.m. EDT at the Lightfoot Bay Nature Area, located off the Pinery-Cemetery Road, in Arvon Township of Baraga County.

Welcoming remarks will be provided by representatives of KLT, the USFWS and the DNR. Cabins at A beautiful vista shows Finlander Bay in Baraga County. (Keweenaw Land Trust photo)the Lightfoot Bay Nature Area will provide shelter in case of inclement weather and light refreshments will be provided.

Attendees are welcome to explore the protected areas as part of guided hikes in the afternoon following the dedication, or on their own with self-guided hiking brochures to be provided.

The KLT is a non-profit organization serving the western counties of Upper Michigan and owns these protected lands as part of its mission as a community partner protecting land, water and quality of life through conservation, stewardship and education.
