Quiz Bowl Tournament At Michigan Tech Saturday

Quiz Bowl teams from six Upper Peninsula high schools will face each other at Michigan Tech Saturday during the Fall Blizzard Bowl quiz bowl tournament.

Following the success of last spring’s inaugural Blizzard Bowl, the fall version is again sponsored by the Center for Pre-College Outreach (CPCO), the Michigan Tech Quiz Bowl Club and Michigan Tech Admissions.

Participating in the Fall Blizzard Bowl are teams from , Houghton, Calumet, L’Anse, Baraga, Republic-Michigamme and L.L. Wright (Ironwood) high schools.

Quiz bowl is a fast-paced trivia contest with games consisting of two, four-person teams, facing each other. Questions will challenge team’s knowledge of history, literature, science, math, pop culture and geography. To succeed, contestants must have a wide array of facts at the ready, during the competition.

The CPCO received a grant from the Michigan Space Grant Consortium to fund a series of quiz bowl tournaments during the 2016-17 school year.

Rose Martell, author of the grant says “I wanted to encourage the students who compete in the itellectural arena with recognition for their efforts and their intellectual abilities.”

Martell says providing these students with tournaments like this gives them more opportunities to compete which encourages growth.

In addition to fun, friendly competition, the Fall Blizzard Bowl results could be used as qualifiers for national-level tournaments next year.

The tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, (Oct. 8) in various rooms in the Chem Sci building. From 12:30 to 1 p.m. the awards ceremony, featuring Tech mascot Blizzard T. Husky, will take place in Chem. Sci. Room 101.
