Senior Heritage Picnic Brings Friends Back Together

Senior Heritage Day Picnic 2016It’s a tradition that has been going on for more than 20 years, the Senior Heritage Day Picnic, held Tuesday at the Houghton County Arena in Hancock.

Now hosted by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the event still provides a special day for local residents 60 and over.

RSVP Program Specialist Christina Mayworm said, “You can just see how many people look forward to this. It’s a way for them to socialize, to learn a little bit more about our community partners. Our vender here are answering questions and sharing about their programs, what they have to offer.”

Participants enjoyed great food and a wide variety of games, while getting information on available services.

But what everyone looks forward to the most is, simply seeing each other again.

77-year-old Beverly Jukkala of Hancock said, “Just seeing all my friends, keep up with everybody—ones that you haven’t seen for a year. We’ve lost a lot of them but we keep them in our thoughts, so A-Okay! Kukkelikuu!”

Over 300 seniors took part in the event.
