In high school football Saturday, Lake Linden Hubbell cruised to an easy 45-15 victory over Iowa-Grant High School from Livingston, Wisconsin.

In high school volleyball Saturday…
– Calumet at the Ashwaubenon Invitational – not reported.
– At The Rock Invitational in Gladstone, Hancock defeated Gwinn 2-0 in the semifinals, and Houghton downed Kingsford 2-0. The Gremlins blanked the Bulldogs 2-0 in the championship match.
– Chassell defeated Baraga 2-0 in the title match at the Baraga Invitational.

In cross country Saturday,  Hancock’s finish at the Superior Central Invitational was not reported.

The Michigan Tech football team suffered a narrow 30-28 loss to seventh-ranked Ferris State Saturday. It was a seesaw battle –  the Huskies spotted the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, then came back to take a 21-10 halftime lead. Ferris responded with two touchdowns in the third quarter. Tech reclaimed the lead with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Wyatt Ford’s fourth field goal of the afternoon with seven seconds remaining sealed the win for FSU. The Huskies were hurt in the third quarter when four consecutive drives ended with turnovers. Quarterback Brandon Cowie completed 13 of 27 passes for 248 yards. Tech gained just 45 yards rushing.

MTU Athletics Logo BAt the Wisconsin-Parkside Tournament on Saturday, the Huskies volleyball team lost 3-1 to St. Cloud State, and 3-0 to Minnesota-Duluth.

The MTU soccer team plays at Bemidji State this afternoon.

The Tech women’s tennis team lost 9-0 at Grand Valley State Saturday morning.

The Northern Michigan University football team overcame an early 20-3 deficit, but fell to Angelo State 47-44 in triple overtime Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats tied the game at 27-all when Tyler Blackburn kicked a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining at the end of the fourth quarter. Both teams scored touchdowns and extra points in the first two overtime series. The Rams then intercepted a Shaye Brown pass in the endzone on the third possession, and proceeded to score the game-winning touchdown.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University football team lost 14-5 at Lawrence University Saturday. The Lions led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, after recovering a Lawrence fumble in the endzone for a safety and a 23-yard Gabe Swanson field goal. The Vikings responded with touchdowns in the second and third quarters, and their defense held the Lions’ offense to just 47 yards in the second half.

Finlandia Lions New LogoAt the Northland College Tournament in Ashland, the Finlandia volleyball team split their Saturday games , falling to Wisconsin-River Falls 3-0, and then defeating the host team 3-1.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team will play at Otterbein University today.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team has the weekend off.

Jordan Zimmermann’s return from the disabled list got off to a rocky start Saturday, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Baltimore Orioles 11-3. Zimmermann gave up two home runs in the first inning, and left after surrendering another in the second. He was charged with six runs. Buck Farmer gave up four runs in relief.

The Tigers wrap up that home set against the Orioles this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Chris Tillman. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The loss dropped Detroit a game behind Baltimore in the race for the final American League wild card playoff berth. Cleveland also lost Saturday, and still leads Detroit by six games in the American League Central Division.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored five times in the eighth inning, and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 Saturday evening. Chase Anderson threw 5-2/3rds shutout innings, giving up just three hits. He left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Keon Broxton home run. The Cards’ rally in the eighth came off Cory Knebel and Jhan Marinez.

The Brewers conclude that set against the Cardinals in St. Louis this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Luke Weaver.

NFL Football LogoThe Detroit Lions open their season this afternoon at Indianapolis. Kickoff is at 4:25. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Packers start their season at Jacksonville today – that’s a 1:00 game.
