MLB: Tigers End Road Trip with Loss
The Astros scored three runs off Drew Smyly in the first inning, and went on to beat the Tigers 6-4 yesterday. Smyly left the game after giving up another run in the third inning. Detroit pulled to within a run when Nick Castellanos hit a two-run triple in the top of the eighth… but Houston responded with an insurance run off Blaine Hardy in the bottom of the inning, and Detroit went down in order in the ninth.
The Tigers return home to host the American League West-leading Athletics tonight. Anibal Sanchez will face Scott Kazmir. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City won, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central is now three-and-a-half games.
Brewers Ripped by Rockies
Yovani Gallardo struggled, and the Brewers lost to the Rockies 10-4 yesterday. Gallardo was charged with eight runs over five innings.
The Brewers are off today… and open a two-game interleague series at Toronto tomorrow afternoon. Marco Estrada will start against Drew Hutchison.
Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central is now six-and-a-half games over both the Reds and Cardinals.
The Brewers called up utility player Jeff Bianchi yesterday, and sent pitcher Alfredo Figaro down to Nashville.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Pat’s Foods/ThermoAnalytics takes on The Goal Post at 6:15… and then faces Post 90/Lakes Lounge at 7:30.
– At Hurontown, Auto Value meets Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation at 7:30.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Nutini’s plays The Marley Bar at 6:15. North Pointe Trucking faces McGann’s/Northern Auto at 7:30.
Wild’s Title Attempt Ends in Semis
The Western Wild girls’ basketball team lost to FGB Lightning 52-39 in the semi-finals of the USSSA National Tournament on Saturday. They opened the tournament Friday morning with a 61-38 loss to eventual tournament winner Team Premier. The Wild bounced back, and took a 45-41 victory over ADS Express, and a 50-44 win over the Southern Lady Spurs on Friday. They wrapped up pool play Saturday morning with a 45-30 loss to the Jupiter Jaguars. The Wild is made up of ninth grade girls from Baraga and Hancock. See all the tournament results here.
East Pulls Away Late to Win U.P. All Star Football Game
The U.P. All-Star Game was a dogfight through three quarters on Saturday. The East team then scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to take a 41-24 victory. It was the sixth-straight win for the East in the All-Star series. The East will not win next year – the game will shift to a North versus South format. Former MTU Hockey Coach Russell Gets New Job
Former Michigan Tech hockey coach Jamie Russell has been named the head coach of the Elmira Jackals of the East Coast Hockey League. Russell coached the Huskies from 2003 to 2011… and was named WCHA Coach of the Year in 2007. He’s spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Providence College. The Jackals are the ECHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. Find out more about Russell’s new job here.
