MTU Athletics Logo BThe Michigan Tech volleyball team opens its season at the Lewis Invitational in Romeoville, Illinois today. Coach Matt Jennings’ squad has been on an upswing, and he says it’s deeper this fall than in years past. “I think there’s a lot of players who can contribute in our system this year,” he said. “It took a little bit longer than we thought to put a starting rotation together in preseason compared to past years, but we look at is as a good thing.” The Huskies will face the host team this afternoon, and then take on Southwest Minnesota State and Central Washington tomorrow.

Tyler Collins’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning drove home JaCoby Jones with the winning run, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Chicago White Sox 3-2 yesterday afternoon. Justin Verlander turned in seven strong innings for Detroit, giving up just three hits. Two of them were solo home runs on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning – the second by former Tiger Alex Avila. The Tigers got one back in the fifth on an RBI single by Andrew Romine. J.D. Martinez singled home Ian Kinsler in the eighth to tie the game.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a series at Kansas City tomorrow night. Anibal Sanchez will start against Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 8:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also won again, so the Tigers still trail the Indians by four and a half games in the American League Central Division.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 last night. All of Milwaukee’s runs came on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis homer in the third inning. Matt Garza threw seven effective innings to get the win.

The Brewers also have today off, and will start a series at Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Junior Guerra will return from the disabled list to pitch against Jameson Taillon.

The Detroit Lions wrap up their preseason schedule at home against the Buffalo Bills tonight. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Green Bay Packers conclude their exhibition schedule on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs this evening.

The NFL says it has found no credible evidence to back up allegations that Green Bay stars Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews used performance enhancing drugs. Both were interviewed by league officials last week. The charges were made in an Al-Jazeera America media report. The primary source in that report had already recanted his statement.
