The Detroit Tigers’ slide from contention continued Saturday evening with a 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Daniel Norris took the loss, giving up all three runs on eight hits. Both he and Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz left the game after the fifth inning because of a long rain delay. James McCann and J.D. Martinez homered for Detroit.

That series wraps up this afternoon in Detroit. Justin Verlander will start against Henry Owens. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also lost, so the Indians’ lead over the Tigers remains at seven games in the American League Central Division.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Seattle Mariners 8-2 Saturday night. Wily Peralta gave up four runs before leaving in the seventh. Milwaukee got two back in the top of the eighth inning on a Ryan Braun double, and an Hernan Perez single, but Seattle broke the game open with four in the bottom of the inning off Blaine Boyer and Rob Scahill.

The Brewers conclude that interleague series against the Mariners in Seattle tonight. Matt Garza will start against Ariel Miranda.

On the opening day of the high school volleyball season…
– Hancock won the Kingsford Invitational with a 2-0 victory over Calumet in the championship game. Early-round scores were not reported.
– Houghton was runner-up at the Soo Invitational, stopping Rogers City 2-0 in the semifinal, and falling to Petoskey 2-0 in the championship match.
– Results from the West Iron County Invitational, which included Lake Linden-Hubbell, Dollar Bay, Baraga, and L’Anse, were not reported.

Great Deer Chase
Great Deer Chase 2016 LogoRain and mud made for a slow track at the Aspirus Great Deer Chase on Saturday. Drew Wilson from Rochester, Minnesota, won the 30-mile event, with a time of 2:07:17.5. Justin Hoffmeyer from Hancock finished about 90 seconds later, in second place overall, and first in the single speed division. Kyia Anderson from St. Cloud, Minnesota, was the top women’s finisher. Steve Elmer from Houghton won the 16-mile event, with a time 1:11:00.6. Brian Lindberg from Marquette finished 52 seconds off the pace, and Bergen Anderson from Wausau, Wisconsin, took the women’s title. Grant Frederickson from Hancock won the four-mile youth race. Ailie Biddle from Ishpeming was the fastest girl.
