MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 3-1 last night. Daniel Norris pitched into the sixth inning, gave up two runs, and took the loss. Detroit’s only score came on a 400-foot home run by J.D. Martinez.
The Tigers continue that set against the Royals tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Cleveland also lost, so the Tigers remain five games behind the Indians in the American League Central Division.
Miguel Cabrera left last night’s game in the fifth inning with a left bicep strain. He injured the muscle while reaching for a wide throw at first base several innings earlier. He’s considered day-to-day. Center fielder Tyler Collins was thrown out of the game for arguing with the home plate umpire in the eighth inning.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and will play a day-night doubleheader at Chicago against the Cubs today. The afternoon game makes up a rainout from April 27th. Matt Garza will pitch against Trevor Cahill. In the evening game, Chase Anderson will start against Jason Hammel.
Twilight League
Luke Paul threw a one-hitter, as Wolverine-Orbit won the Twilight League title with a 4-0 victory over Superior National Bank-Stanton in game three of the championship series last night. Wolverine took an early lead when Mike Saari drove in Alex Van Wagner in the first inning. They added an unearned run in the second inning, and two insurance runs in the sixth. Paul struck out six. Trent Keteri took the loss. Saari was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Tyler LaDuron was named the season MVP.
Copper Country Horseshoe League
Calumet One claimed the Copper Country Horseshoe League championship last night, but it wasn’t easy. They lost their match 5-4 to third-place Harter’s Party Store. Second-place L-and-L got past Dreamland One 5-4, but fell two points short of Calumet One in the season standings. In other results from an evening of very close matches, Calumet Electronics edged Dreamland Two 5-4, Harter’s Carquest slipped past Fat Lil Bandits 5-4, Drift Inn nosed out Gasoline Alley 5-4, and Luigi’s defeated Ahmeek Fire Department 6-3.
Here are the final standings for the season:
NFL
The Detroit Lions have signed former Green Bay tight end Andrew Quarless. Quarless played six seasons with the Packers, though he missed almost all of last season because of injury. If he makes the team, he will miss the first two games of the regular season because of a suspension for firing a handgun into the air during an early-morning argument in Miami. The signing goes against statements general manager Bob Quinn and team owner Martha Firestone Ford made when Quinn was hired that they would maintain a zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence and firearm violations. Both of Detroit’s top two tight ends are injured.
Youth Sports
The Houghton School District will offer a Back 2 School Sports Camp next week. The camp is open to boys and girls entering the first through sixth grades.
