MLB: Tigers Win Fifth Straight
The Tigers broke open a pitching duel with five runs in the seventh inning, and beat the Rangers 8-2 last night. J.D. Martinez started the onslaught with a two-run homer. He closed it by striking out with the bases loaded… but, by that time, Detroit had collected six hits and two walks, and stolen two bases. Ian Kinsler homered in the first inning, and singled in two insurance runs in the eighth. Drew Smyly earned the win… giving up one run on five hits over six innings.
The Tigers have won five in a row, and continue that series at Texas tonight. Anibal Sanchez will face Joe Saunders. Hear the first pitch at 8:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.
The Royals lost, so Detroit’s lead in the American League Central is up to three games.
A familiar face has returned to the Toledo Mudhens. The Tigers purchased the contract of lefthander Daniel Schlereth from the Pirates yesterday. Schlereth originally joined the Tigers in 2009, as part of the deal that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, and brought Max Scherzer to Detroit. He was released at the end of the 2012 season… spent 2013 in the Baltimore minor league system… and signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh late last year. Schlereth has struggled this season, and his acquisition is designed to provide pitching depth at Toledo, rather than bring a new arm to the Tigers’ bullpen.
Brewers Lose Marathon
The Brewers played their longest game in more than a decade last night… losing to the Nationals 4-2 in 16 innings. The nearly five-and-a-half-hour marathon finally ended when Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer off Mike Fiers, who was pitching his fourth inning of long relief.
The Brewers wrap up that series against the Nationals this afternoon. Marco Estrada will start against Stephen Strasburg.
