Morning Sports for Monday, June 23rd:
MLB: Tigers Sweep Cleveland
The Tigers scored seven runs in the fifth inning, and went on to trounce the Indians 10-4 yesterday. After giving up 10 runs in his previous start, Max Scherzer allowed just one over six innings to earn his ninth win of the season. Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in three runs.
The Tigers have won four in a row. The Royals lost again, so Detroit now leads Kansas City by two-and-a-half games in the American League Central.
The Tigers have today off, and open a series at Texas tomorrow night. Drew Smyly will face Colby Lewis. Hear the first pitch at 8:05 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Detroit has placed reliever Ian Krol on the disabled list with what’s officially being called “shoulder inflammation.” Krol describes it as “dead arm”… the result of a heavy workload so far this season. Two Tigers’ pitchers made their debuts in yesterday’s game. Patrick McCoy pitched a scoreless eighth… giving up one hit. Chad Smith didn’t fare as well… giving up three runs in the ninth inning.
Brewers Hold Off Rockies
Lyle Overbay’s homer in the top of the ninth gave the Brewers an insurance run that they really needed, and Milwaukee held off the Rockies 6-5 yesterday. Aramis Ramirez also homered. Kyle Lohse gave up three runs over just five innings, but was good enough to earn his ninth win of the season.
The Brewers return home to host the Nationals tonight. Matt Garza will start against Gio Gonzalez.

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball play tonight…
– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Post 90/Lakes Lounge faces The Marley Bar at 6:15, and then takes on Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation at 7:30.
– At Hurontown, 906/Pilgrim River Steakhouse meets The Goal Post at 6:15. Osmose plays Auto Value at 7:30.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto faces Erickson Crowley Peterson 6:15, and then takes on Nutini’s at 7:30.
North Wins Both U-P All-Star Hoops Games
Houghton’s Elisa Jurmu scored a game-high 31 points, as the North Girls All-Stars beat the South at the 29th annual U.P. All-Star Classic basketball game in St. Ignace Saturday. Jurmu was named the Most Valuable Player of the game. Kelsie Richards from Houghton and Julia Daavettila from Dollar Bay each added nine points… Valarie Rajala from L’Anse scored eight… and Ontonagon’s Brooke Turin had two. The North boys’ team got off to a fast start, and cruised past the South 114-67. Tyler Jandron from Negaunee led all scorers with 18 points, and was named MVP. Jimmy Veker from L’Anse added 14. Trent Keteri from Houghton scored nine… Paul Torola from Calumet had six… and Hancock’s Alex Almquist tallied five points. See some video highlights here.
