Miguel Cabrera’s ninth-inning home run lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox yesterday afternoon. Michael Fulmer turned in another strong effort. He gave up single runs in the first, seventh and eighth innings. Bruce Rondon relieved Fulmer with two outs in the eighth, and struck out the only batter he faced. Justin Wilson pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season. Detroit scored two in the third on a Victor Martinez single, and added another in the sixth on a James McCann homer.
After sweeping the Red Sox, the Tigers take today off, and return home to host the Houston Astros tomorrow night. Matt Boyd will pitch against Collin McHugh. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Wilson became the closer for last night’s game after Francisco Rodriguez had to leave the team to attend to a personal matter. Rodriguez is expected to be back in the bullpen tomorrow.
Might the Tigers be looking for an upgrade at catcher? Despite General Manager Al Avila’s recent statement that he expected to make no moves before the non-waiver trade deadline, Fox Sports reported yesterday that Detroit is talking with Milwaukee about All Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy. The potential deal would likely include current Tigers’ catcher James McCann.
The Arizona Diamondbacks scored five runs in the first inning, and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson struggled into the fifth inning, and was charged with all eight Arizona runs.
The Brewers conclude that set against the Diamondbacks this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against former Tiger Robbie Ray.

In Copper Country Twilight Baseball League play tonight…
– Wolverine-Orbit will face Superior National Bank-Stanton in the final game of the regular season at 6:30 at the Stanton field.
– Pat’s Foods-Mosquito Inn will take on the Copper Country Miners in the first game of the playoffs. The winner will advance to the tournament semifinals.

The Detroit Red Wings and goalie Petr Mrazek avoided their arbitration hearing at the last minute yesterday by agreeing to a two-year, eight million dollar deal. It was basically a meeting in the middle for the two sides – Mrazek had asked for 10-million, and Detroit had offered a little less than six-million.

The Finlandia University volleyball team has added another player for the upcoming season. Makayla Mickam is a middle blocker from Hopkins, Michigan.
