The Copper Country has its share of ghost towns, and a documentary film tells the story of just one of them.
A screening of the film “Winona: A Copper Country Ghost Town” will take place this Saturday at 7pm at the Elm River Township School in Winona.
The Copper Range Historical Society and film director Dr. Michael Loukinen are presenting this Director’s Cut of the 2015 documentary film, which recently aired on the PBS station at Northern Michigan University.
The film focuses on the experiences of community members in remembering the history of a town that was once part of the Upper Peninsula’s copper boom, but is now little more than a school, a church and a spattering of houses in the forest.
Elm River Township School principal Bruce Matson will deliver welcoming remarks, Dr. Loukinen will lead a discussion following the film screening, and refreshments will be provided by the Copper Range Historical Society of South Range.
