Mattila Claims Fast Pitch Title – Saturday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers scored three runs in the seventh inning, and came from behind to defeat the Chicago White Sox 7-5 Friday night. Miguel Cabrera’s bases-loaded single drove in the two winning runs. Detroit starter Michael Fulmer had an off-night, giving up a run in the first inning, and four in the fifth. Kyle Ryan relieved him in the sixth, and got the win. Francisco Rodriguez struck out two in the ninth to earn his 27th save.

The Tigers continue that series against the White Sox in Chicago tonight. Matt Boyd will pitch against Chris Sale. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2 Friday night. Chicago took an early lead, scoring one run off Jimmy Nelson in the first inning, and three in the second. Nelson continued through the fifth inning, and took the loss. Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers host the Cubs again tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against John Lackey.

Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
Softball GraphicMattila Rock and Dock claimed the Holly McCullah Memorial Trophy as champions of the Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League with a 14-10 victory over Superior National Bank in the tournament title game. Mattila scored five runs in the first inning, and was never headed. A seventh-inning rally by SNB fell short.

Melissa Baker and Sammi Jahfetson split the pitching for Mattila, with Baker taking the win. Molly Berg took the loss for SNB, with Lois Knuuttila coming in to relieve her.

Darla Mensch once again led Mattila at the plate with a double and three singles. Heather Mensch, Sammi Jahfetson and Melissa Baker each had two singles. Molly Berg had two singles for Superior National Bank and Laura Berg had a single and a double.

Little League LogoThe Portage Lake Minor League baseball team fell 7-6 to Grosse Pointe Farms in their first pool game at the state tournament in Midland Friday. Portage Lake will face Southwest Jackson this afternoon at 12:30, and wraps up pool play tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 against Birmingham.

The Portage Lake Major League baseball team will open pool play in the state tournament at Tecumseh against Lincoln Park North this morning at 10:30. Portage Lake will face Tecumseh tomorrow afternoon at 1:00, and Grosse Pointe Woods South Monday at 10:30.
