$176 million –the total amount of the settlement reached by Enbridge Energy Partners for their role in the most expensive oil spill in U.S. history and other spills and violations.
The settlement was announced by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice over a ruptured pipeline in 2010 that spilled into a 40 mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River.
The deal also mandates Enbridge to make efforts to prevent future spills, detect leaks and have emergency plans across the pipeline network.
