Anibal Sanchez pitched six effective innings last night, but he and the bullpen faltered in the seventh, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 6-2. Sanchez had allowed just one run on six hits through six innings. He struck out 10. He left the game after giving up a walk and a single to open the seventh inning. Bruce Rondon relieved him, and the Twins went on to score five times to put the game away. Detroit’s only runs came in the ninth.
The Tigers wrap up that home series against the Twins this afternoon. Justin Verlander will pitch against Ervin Santana. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Josh Harrison scored on a “little league” home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 last night. Harrison led off the inning with a triple to center field off Tyler Thornburgh. He continued home with the winning run on a throwing error by Milwaukee second baseman Scooter Gennett. The odd play came just after the Brewers had tied the game in the top of the ninth. Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra gave up two runs on two hits in the first inning, then allowed just one more hit through the sixth.
The Brewers play in Pittsburgh again this evening. Chase Anderson will pitch against Jeff Locke.
There was a scary moment in the second inning of last night’s Brewers game, when a line drive off the bat of Hernan Perez struck Pittsburgh starter Jameson Taillon in the back of the head. Taillon collapsed, but recovered, and stayed in the game.

Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
The Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League playoffs begin tonight at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. Mattila Rock and Dock will face Northern Michigan Land Brokers at 5:30, and Superior National Bank will take on Auto Pro Glass and Tire at 7:15. The winners will meet Friday at 7:00 at the Chassell field to decide who will claim the Holly McCullah Memorial Trophy.

The Detroit Pistons have signed forward Henry Ellenson to a multi-year contract. Detroit drafted Ellenson out of Marquette University with the 18th overall pick in this year’s draft. Terms of the contract have not been officially disclosed, but reports say it’s a four-year deal.
Former Piston Jodie Meeks has undergone more surgery on the injured foot that caused him to miss most of last season. Meeks was traded to the Orlando Magic three weeks ago. His new team says he will be out of action indefinitely.
