MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored three runs in the seventh inning, and came from behind to beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Friday night. Detroit took an early lead when Ian Kinsler slammed a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Verlander shut out the Royals through the first five innings. KC scored two in the sixth. Verlander completed the seventh, and Detroit’s rally earned him the win. In the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Collins tied the game with a solo home run. A few batters later, Victor Martinez drove in the final two runs with a bases-loaded infield single that glanced off the glove of former Tiger Joakim Soria.
The Tigers continue that home set against Kansas City this evening. Mike Pelfrey will face Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Collins was in the lineup because outfielder Justin Upton has been placed on the bereavement list. The team has not said why. MLB rules say that a player placed on the bereavement list must be away from the team for at least three games, but no more than seven.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost to the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 Friday night. Milwaukee built a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, but Cincy scored three times in the sixth against Matt Garza and Carlos Torres, and added an insurance run in the seventh. Milwaukee closed the gap to one run in the ninth, and had the bases loaded with one out, but Scooter Gennett and Ryan Braun each popped out to end the game.
The Brewers play at Cincinnati again tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against John Lamb.
Milwaukee brought reliever Corey Knebel up from Colorado Springs for last night’s game. Reliever Michael Blazek has been sent down.
