The Detroit Tigers’ woes against the Cleveland Indians continued with a 12-1 loss last night. Anibal Sanchez gave up two runs in the second, two more in the fourth, and left the game as Cleveland scored three more in the fifth. Buck Farmer replaced Sanchez, and was roughed up for three more runs in the sixth inning. Mark Lowe surrendered the final two runs in the eighth.

The Tigers conclude that series in Cleveland this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Josh Tomlin. Hear the first pitch at 12:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was named to the American League All-Star Team yesterday. Cabrera was not voted in as a starter, but was selected by players to be a reserve. He’s the only Tiger on the team. Second baseman Ian Kinsler is one of five players named to the Final Vote election, and could join Cabrera if he wins.

Zach Davies turned in a strong start, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Washington Nationals 5-2 last night. Davies pitched into the seventh. He allowed nine hits, but held the Nats to two runs. Aaron Hill had three hits, including a home run. Hernan Perez also homered.

The Brewers continue that series in Washington this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against Tanner Roark.

Catcher Jonathan Lucroy will represent the Milwaukee Brewers on the National League All-Star Team. Outfielder Ryan Braun could join him if he wins the Final Vote competition.

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball last night…
– The Copper Country Miners v Pat’s Food-Mosquito Inn – not reported.
– Dean Kangas-State Farm got past Wolverine-Orbit 7-4. State Farm put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh, after Wolverine had tied it with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brady Turner went six innings to get the win for State Farm. He also scored three runs.

Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League play tonight, Northern Michigan Land Brokers meets Mattila Rock and Dock at 5:30, and then takes on Auto Pro Glass and Tire at 7:15. Both games will be played at the Chassell Field.

Detroit Red Wings forward Teemu Pulkkinen is recovering from shoulder surgery, and will not be ready for the start of the NHL season. Team officials say the procedure took place a month ago. It stems from an injury he suffered several years ago that was aggravated this past season. The earliest Pulkkinen is expected to be able to play is late October. General Manager Ken Holland also revealed that defenseman Alexey Marchenko had surgery on his wrist a couple of weeks ago in Russia. Marchenko is expected to be ready for the beginning of the season.

Strawberry FestivalThe Chassell Lions Club 5k and 2k Fun Run and Walk will be held Saturday as part of the Copper Country Strawberry Festival. Online registration continues through tomorrow. You may also sign up at the Chassell Heritage Center Saturday morning between 7:00 and 7:45. Money raised supports the non-profit Simple Kindness for Youth.
