Upton Powers Walkoff Tigers' Win – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Justin Upton’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Detroit Tigers a wild 8-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. Miguel Cabrera had put Detroit up early with a massive two-run homer in the first inning, but the Mariners scored four off Mike Pelfrey in the second to take the lead. After scoring one in the bottom of the second, Detroit reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fourth on a Cameron Maybin triple. Seattle went back on top with two off Pelfrey in the fifth… Detroit came back with two runs on Upton’s first homer of the night in the seventh… and the Mariners tied it with a run off Justin Wilson in the eighth. Francisco Rodriguez and Alex Wilson held Seattle scoreless in the ninth, 10th and 11th. Anibal Sanchez stranded a runner at third in the 12th, and earned the win when Upton ended it with his second round-tripper of the night.

The Tigers host the Mariners again tonight. Justin Verlander will pitch against James Paxton. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a two-game series at Oakland tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Sonny Gray.

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch League softball last night…
– Mattila Rock and Dock defeated Northern Michigan Land Brokers 6 -1. Melissa Baker was the winning pitcher – she and Shantal Lorenz each had three hits for Mattila. Hannah Hill took the loss.
– Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Superior National Bank 12-5. Morgan Peters and Sarah Audette struck out eight for Auto Pro. Adena Anderson. Anderson struck out 12, but took the loss for SNB. Erin Gast had three hits for Auto Pro. Morgan Gast, Kirsten Codere and Megan Yeo each had two hits.

Copper Country Twilight League
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…
– Wolverine-Orbit meets Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Dollar Bay field.
– Superior National Bank-Stanton faces the Copper Country Miners at the Wolverine field.
Both games begin at 6:30.

Copper Country Horseshoe League
Calumet One took over first place in the Copper Country Horseshoe League last night by blanking Calumet Electronics 9-0. The perfect night moved them just ahead of L and L, which defeated Drift Inn 8-1. Harter’s Party Store moved into a second place tie with L and L by shutting out Dreamland Two 9-0. In other scores, Ahmeek Fire Department defeated Fat Lil Bandits 7-2… Luigi’s downed Harter’s Carquest 6-3… and Gasoline Alley edged Dreamland One 5-4.

Liberty Run LogoLiberty Run Registration Deadline Near
Advance registrations for the upcoming Liberty 5k Run/Walk in Baraga are due by Friday. The race will be held July 4th, as part of Baraga County Lumberjack Days.
