Ontonagon & Baraga Holding Community Events During Free Fishing Weekend

This is definitely the weekend to get outdoors.

Saturday and Sunday, you don’t need to purchase a license to go fishing and ORV riders may use DNR trails without purchasing a permit.

Two major events in the Copper Country are being held this weekend that take full advantage of the free fishing.

The 26th Annual Ontonagon Kids Fishing Derby will be held at the Ontonagon Marina on Saturday.

Derby Co-Chairperson Dawn Buss-Glodowski from the Ontonagon Ranger District tells us what’s in store.

Registration begins at 9am and prizes will be awarded at 1pm.

Across the Keweenaw Peninsula, you’re invited to the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival.

The 11th Annual event takes place at the L’Anse Waterfront Park on Saturday and features the Keweenaw Classic Fishing Tournament.

Other popular events include the Little Miss Superior Talent contest, the Pequaming Run and the Tour da L’Anse cycling race.

There’s no shortage of fun for the kids either including the kid’s fishing pond.
