A new park is being established in central Houghton as the result of a successful grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund to the City of Houghton in partnership with several local conservations groups.
Along with the city, matching funds for the purchase of the property were provided by the Copper Country Audubon (CCA), and administrative help came from the Keweenaw Land Trust (KLT).
The MDNR Trust Fund is not tax money, but comes from oil and gas leases on state lands, of which, by act of the legislature is set aside for recreation purposed for the people of Michigan.
The undeveloped wooded hillside lies near the center of Houghton between Franklin and Portage Streets just three blocks from downtown and will be called the Central Houghton Greenspace Park.
The origin of this nature area began with the late Marilyn Mason, a long-time member of both Copper Country Audobon and the Land Trust, who lived across the street from the new nature area.
Upon her passing, she donated the funds to CCA and six undeveloped lots on Franklin Street to the KLT to establish the Mason Nature Area to remain undeveloped under the care of both groups.
The Mason Nature Area will be joined with the newly purchased property to become the 4.5-acre Central Houghton Greenspace Park.
Because of the ruggedness of the area, it is relatively undisturbed and in a natural state and free from litter or misuse.
Another key player in the development of the nature area is the Keweenaw Geoheritage Project, also of Houghton, who recognize and interpret the unique geology of the site that includes the ancient Scales Creek lava flow and possibly early copper mine exploration.
The nature area serves as a hub for many other significant geological sites throughout the Houghton area.
A parking area and signage are planned on 7th Avenue, including benches and a walking path to allow citizens to enjoy the peacefulness of nature in the middle of the city.
The beautiful view to the north from the nature area is of the forested hills on the other side of the Portage Ship Canal.
The property provides habitat for many migrating and resident songbirds.
Copper Country Audobon along with KLT will help the city to design trails, signage, erect bird houses, and enhance bird habitat in the nature area.
The dedication of the Central Houghton Greenspace Park will take place Friday, May 27, at 1:00pm.
