Houghton Students Display Their Math Skills At U.P. Math Championships

The results of the 2016 U.P. Math Championships are in–with Houghton dominating the leader board.

Houghton High School’s Team Black took first place overall among high schools, while juniors Noah Gershenson, Maggie Wang and Ben Holladay took the top three spots in the individual high school student category.

Houghton Middle School’s Team Black was also first in their group and nine of the top ten in the individual category were from that school. 6th Grader Sonia Jin was first, followed by 8th Graders Shweta Senapati and Yvonne Wang.

Hancock 5th Grader David Hendrickson was first in the elementary school individual category but Houghton Elementary’s Team A was first in the team competition.

The event featured 225 registered students from 38 different schools.

More than $7,000 in prizes were given away, including $5,000 in scholarships to Michigan Tech.

Local teachers Tiffany Scullion from Houghton and Chris Woods from Calumet helped make the event possible.
