They’re about halfway there and climbing.
The Calumet Theater has been raising funds for a much needed elevator to the second floor balcony and ballroom.
The historic venue has raised nearly $150,000 of the estimated $300,000 needed for the Lift Us Up Elevator project.
To help get them closer, local musical group Keweenaw Brewgrass and Friends will be performing An Unplugged Evening of Music Saturday night.
Calumet Theater Executive Director Laura Miller says, “If you can go back 116 years, when the Calumet Theater opened its doors, there were no electronics there—no microphones, no loudspeakers, no monitors–and that’s exactly what the Brewgrass bunch is going to be doing. They’re going to be playing totally acoustic, with no microphones, no amplification—and it’s going to be like the old days.”
Tickets to see the show at 7:30 at the Calumet Theater Saturday are just $10 and you’re going to hear a variety of music.
Miller said, “The Brewgrass is not just going to be doing bluegrass music. They’re going to be doing Texas Swing, blues and jazz music, even a brewgrass rock—as they’re telling me—some mountain music, some gospel music. You’re going to hear a variety of things and their guests, Gail English and Louise Oppliger and Kora Johnson are going to add to the mix of these different songs.”
Keweenaw Brewgrass and Friends are performing the concert at no cost to the Theater to benefit the elevator project.
